I guess since I’ve got the itinerary in my hand and I’ve pre-registered for the floor pass at the show I can start to settle into the reality of the situation: IBM is actually springing to send me off to San Francisco for three days of computer geek happiness in the city by the bay.
Too bad I hate computer geeks.
Certainly, I’ll have to put my time in – see the keynotes, attend any special shindigs within reason but when it comes to the cocktail parties and yacht cruises, man, I’m out the door and travelling on my own hoof. Let the gollum-looking weenies blink unseeingly into the sun and howl as they retreat back into the bowels of their /etc directory. I’ve got a decent little tour planned heading north out of Union Square, through Chinatown, into North Beach with a stop at City Lights and on up to Telegraph Hill and ending at Fisherman’s Wharf. If time allows I’ll head south-west to see the Haight. Probably won’t make Alcatraz since I think the 9 to 5 is going to be pretty well packed but anything else I can accomplish in the allowed time is going to get tackled.
Don’t be surprised if it seems like I dropped off the face of the earth. Either I’m doing the Cali thing or some rag-headed weenie hijacked my non-stop, cross country plane and I’m a smoldering cinder at the bottom of some crater in western Maryland. Either way, it’ll be fun.
