Sitting on the dock of the bay

Another smashing weekend accompanied by the expected Monday morning gluey eye syndrom. Saw the Jeanie Johnston at anchor down at Penn’s Landing. Pretty cool setup, the tour of the ship is fairly short as she’s not very big and a goodly portion of the reconstruction is given over to modern engines, rooms and other neccessities of 21st Century sea-faring. There was enough of the period flavor left though to give a glimpse of what the Famine immigrants suffered. I think I’m glad I didn’t sail as a passenger on one of those ships and doubly glad none of my known ancestors had to either.

Finished up the day with drinks at City Tavern – if you get down there, try the smoked trout, it’s friggin’ incredible! Happened to literally run into my bro in front of his house and so kicked around with him for a couple of hours in the Northern Liberties. Even had some of the Jersey crew swing by for a drink although the heat – no A/C in the bar – the surly waiter and our collective exhaustion cut the evening short.

Now we’re on the countdown for the big Eastern Shore weekend. I’m hoping to make one of those ironman trips I do but we’ll have to see how things go. Flogging Molly on Thursday night though! That ought to be enough to tide me over a couple of days.

While I’m on the music subject, anyone with even a passing interest in some good tunes ought to try and pick up a copy of the Dropkick Murphys latest, Blackout. There are a lot of covers, all but one of which are really ripping tunes, and overall it’s a little toned down from some of their early gritty stuff but it’s damn fine. Their best work I think since Do or Die and light-years beyond their last.

Check it out if you’ve got fourteen bucks to spare.
