Ares in the night sky

Who else was wacky enough to get out of bed at 5:30 this morning and drive away from the bright lights in order to get a decent view of Mars as it made its closest approach to Earth in 60,000 years?

Man, that’s something. Here I was, listening to NPR discuss the event, hanging halfway out of my car door parked in the Licensed Guide lot on the south end of the battlefield and witnessing something that hasn’t been seen since before recorded time began. Now that’s damned nifty.

I think I said it before but just in case I didn’t – does anyone else find it odd that Mars makes its swing in towards Earth during one of mankind’s greatest periods of trial? Appropriate, oddly appropriate.

And does that mean that as Mars swings away things will mellow out? I suppose we can all hope so.

That’s that, I’ve seen it and now all I want to do is go back to bed. Long time before I get that chance though. Damn sight shorter than 60 aeons but still, it seems like a long time to me.
